Bartle Hall Estate – New Coaching Barn Entrance
Bartle Hall is considered as one of the premier wedding venues in the UK, located right here in the heart of Lancashire. The award-winning estate covers 16 acres of landscaped grounds and private woodland and includes a beautiful 18th century country house and rustic coaching barn.
The courtyard entranceway to the Coaching Barn is a large space to the rear of the main house which consisted of a smooth tarmac area bordered by planting. Whilst functional, the owners wanted to add the “wow” factor which the beauty and charm of the rest of the estate portray.
A major redesign project began in February 2024, when Black Barn Architecture were commissioned by the owners of Bartle Hall to reimagine the courtyard space into a stunning new showpiece for their clients.
The project was particularly challenging as all construction needed to take place within a non-negotiable time window of 18 days, so as not to impact pre booked weddings and events on the estate. The team at Black Barn Architecture, working alongside the main building contractors, Benthom Limited & Ian Jenkinson from Barnholme Joinery Limited, rose to the challenge and delivered the project precisely within the required timeframe and with minimal impact to the guests at Bartle Hall.
Now, newlyweds and their guests are invited to step through this beautiful new entranceway where tradition meets modernity. The newly completed lychgate entrance to the Coaching Barn, designed by Chris Homer & the team at Black Barn Architecture is a striking commission that seamlessly blends heritage craftsmanship with contemporary design, through the use of natural oak timbers, powder coated metalwork, and striking glass panels.
This structure isn’t just an entrance—it’s an experience. Designed with meticulous attention to detail, it features intricate woodwork and thoughtfully sourced materials that honour the historical essence of lychgates whilst embracing the clean lines of modern architecture. Nestled harmoniously within its redesigned surroundings and softened with fragrant evergreen Jasmine climbing towards its apex, it creates a natural transition from the serene courtyard world outside into the traditional coach barn building.
Perfectly balancing functionality and artistry, this new feature at Bartle Hall serves as a statement piece that welcomes guests with grace and purpose, it elevates the space it inhabits. It’s more than just an entrance—it’s a symbol of craftsmanship, innovation, and the enduring allure of architecture.
